Task metadata

A task can have a lot of metadata associated with it. This could include:

  • Created date
  • Due date
  • Scheduled date
  • Is the task a Next Action, Someday, Waiting on, etc

There are two ways to store this information, inline inside the original task, or externally in a database.

If we store the metadata along with the task, you end up with tasks that look like this:

  • Some example task #next-action ➕ 2025-12-01 ⏳ 2025-12-16

Personally I don’t like how this looks visually when I’m working in my notes, so I chose to add a unique block ID with each task, and store the metadata in the plugin’s data.json file.

The task now looks like this: (note the block ID at the end)

  • Some example task ^tz1

Compatibility with other task plugins

To make Task Zero compatible with other task management plugins, you are able to turn on the more verbose first option in the plugin Settings page.
